BIG Give Event – November 17
The Giving Circle of HOPE will reach a milestone of having raised and distributed more than $1,000,000 to strengthen our local community in Northern Virginia. Through your generous support over 12 years, we have been able to provide this “BIG Give.”
During this event, attendees will celebrate crossing that $1M milestone and will experience the power of collective giving through contributing $25, $50, or $100. Three local nonprofits, vetted by the Giving Circle, will talk about one of their programs and we will vote then and there. Collective giving in action!
Spotlight: Nonprofits Seeking Grants from The Giving Circle of HOPE
Grant season at the Giving Circle of HOPE is underway! Nearly 30 grant requests successfully passed the initial review and were presented over three sessions this month. Voting members will determine, to the extent funds allow, which requests will be funded. Join by OCTOBER 31 and you can participate. We’re putting a spotlight on some requesting nonprofits to underscore the difference you can make by joining the Giving Circle today! Read about more grant requestors.
The David H. Lawson Foundation asks for funds for their Dental Hygiene Education Initiative to educate individuals about dental care and oral hygiene to prevent the occurrence of oral health problems, thereby enhancing their self-image and employment potential.
Fairfax CASA asks for funds to recruit, train, and support volunteers to serve as advocates for children whose families have been cited for abuse and neglect by the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
OAR asks for funds to provide courses in employment readiness and employment skills to released individuals who have been incarcerated. Employment is an enormous barrier to success. The courses address anger management, ethics and writing. Skilled volunteers help with resumes, interview skills and applications.
The Reading Connection asks for funds to establish a housing partner; recruit, train and conduct background checks for volunteers (25 per site); rent, supplies and books for weekly Read-Aloud programs, and quarterly Reading Family workshop for parents.
Space Of Her Own asks for funds for the room renovation portion of its programs. The participating schools for this request are Polk and Patrick Henry Elementary in Alexandria and Hoffman-Boston and Randolph Elementary in Arlington.
The Path Toward Tomorrow: Fairfax County Human Services Needs Assessment and the Giving Circle of HOPE Response
The Giving Circle of HOPE hosted three free programs on human service needs in the community discovered during the County’s Human Services Needs Survey and Assessment. Representatives from Fairfax County Department of Human Services highlighted areas of need identified in the assessment and a member of the Giving Circle of HOPE’s Guiding Circle shared what the Giving Circle is and how it helps local nonprofits in their work with struggling residents.
10th Anniversary of the Break The Cycle Endowment
What a great way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this endowment! Two local nonprofits received $1,500 each in August. One was Girls Inspired and Ready to Lead (GIRL); the other Space Of Her Own (SOHO). Guiding Circle members enjoyed marking the occasion with each organization individually. Read all about it on our blog and subscribe to receive entries to your email!
